Christmas in Porto!
Each region of Portugal has its own Christmas, so we eat
different delicacies at Christmas Eve. However, one dish is spread all over the
country: Boiled codfish with boiled potatoes and vegetables. For a foreigner it
doesn´t seem very appealing, but believe me it´s very tasty.
We drizzle everything with a delicious olive oil and we
drink the best wines. At my place we drink a good Douro wine, and with deserts,
a wonderful Vintage Port from 1963!
We eat many deserts at Christmas Eve, and also Serra da
Estrela Cheese (one of the best Portuguese cheeses). We taste a little bit of
everything: Rabanadas (a kind of French Toast with a sweet sauce made with
sugar, water, Port wine, a touch of cinnamon and a slice of lemon), Sonhos
(made with a fried dough), Caramel and eggs pudding, Milk Custard, Rice
Pudding, eggs deserts, King Cake, pineapple and many other deserts and sweets,
depending on the region.
At Christmas day lunch, we eat roasted turkey at my place,
and at dinner, we are together with the rest of my family and we eat turkey,
roasted suckling pig and all the Christmas deserts again!! All those wonderful
delicacies served with the best wines!!
The King Cake: delicious dry fruits and candied fruits cake
