A visit to the National Museum
Soares dos Reis: The oldest Public Museum of Art from Portugal, was founded in
1833.During the XIX century it was connected to the Oporto Academy of Fine
Arts. In 1911 was named as Soares dos Reis Museum and in 1932 was considered as
a Nacional Museum. This Museum is installed in a XVIII Palace – “The Carrancas
Palace".
The Museum has a permanent
collection of Portuguese Painting and Sculpture dating the XIX and the XX
centuries.
The visitor can also
discovery Portuguese ceramics, Oriental porcelain, jewellery, textiles and
furniture.
Some National treasures
are exposed in this beautiful Museum, and I want to highlight the sculptures
masterpieces of the Portuguese sculptor Soares dos Reis:
Look careful to a marble
young girl. This girl really existed. She was the viscountess of Vinhó e
Almedina. Her clothes are so perfect, her look, her hair, the detailed marble
lace of her dress... The French sculpture Rodin came to Portugal to look at
this sculpture and kissed Soares dos Reis hands.
So, go and visit this Museum
and learn a little bit more about Portuguese artists, and enjoy a few hours of
pure visual pleasure!
